Some educators feel that there is too much testing in the schools. What would you tell a teacher who says that doing pre and post assessments is just time wasted that could be used for instruction?
I think that there is a lot of testing in the schools. However, I think that pre and post assessments are really important in driving instruction. It's important to know what level your students are on before you teach a concept so that you can know what exactly to focus on. It's also important to assess at the end of your lesson so that you can know if you taught effectively and what you still need to address. The thing that I love about pre and post assessments though is that they don't have to be super formal like other tests. They can be very informal and quick so that the kids don't feel like they are constantly being tested and the pressure can be off for a bit.
I would tell that teach that he or she is incorrect because I believe that pre and post assessments are both good for instruction. Plus these assessments can be used to show how much a student knows about a subject before and how much about the subject after. I also think that these assessments can show teachers a lot about students different personalities and how they learn differently. Not to mention that these assessments don't require any pressure.
My account wasn't working this is Katherine's blog! 3/27: If a teacher came to me who feels there is too much testing in schools and that a pre and post assessment test is just time wasted then my response to them would be as follows, " I understand your concern that you do not feel that assessment tests are necessary but in my experience I do feel they are. These tests help to see where my students are at on a certain subject, whether this means they do not feel solid on the material yet or whether the material is to easy. It gives me the information I need to help those students who are struggling and to move the students who have mastered the material on to something more advanced. These tests a re not designed to waste time or discourage students they give me the teacher the ability to do my job well by giving me a foundation of where I should begin with my students."
