  1. The regular education teacher plays a significant role in the IEP process. They are the ones that are with the student all day every day, so they know where the student is at and how they are progressing in their education. They are the ones that know first hand what the concerns are and why there is an IEP being held in the first place. Therefore, they can give that firsthand knowledge and expertise as to what is happening so that the IEP team as a whole can work together in order to come up with the best solution to help the student.
The regular ed teacher has the role of referring the student for an IEP in the first place since they are the ones that see concerns first. After the IEP is completed, they have the role of making sure that everything in the IEP is implemented in the classroom. They will continue to be the one in charge of the student's academic progress, so they have to be the one to keep an eye on them and to keep records to make sure everything is going according to the IEP.

  2. One role is through collaboration in the development of an IEP. My contributions, goals, and shared ideas should be valued, clear, and respected along with the rest of the team members ideas. Another role is to make assessments that contribute to the six decision-making areas of special education which are screening, diagnosis, instructional evaluation, program placement, curriculum placement, and program evaluation. If I need more assistance, I can request help from psychologists, nurses, social workers, etc.
